Selecting a Pet

So, you’re getting a pet. That's great! A pet brings many things into your life, including unconditional love and companionship, fun play and exercise. The pet also brings the dreaded 'R'-word...Responsibility. After all, you are entering into a life-long relationship.

Before selecting an animal, you should carefully research what pet would be right for you and your family. That’s right - this is a family decision! Everyone should help make the choice. Keep in mind, however, that the children who are promising to do ‘everything’ for the pet, likely won’t. The ultimate responsibility will always stay with the adults in the home. Consideration also needs to be given to the animals already living in your home. Young animals generally adapt more easily to new pets than older animals do.

Keep in mind that pets take a lot of your time. Is this the best time for you to get a pet?

Another important factor to consider is how much it will cost to have a pet. To help you determine if you can afford a pet we have put together a few budgets. These can be found in the menu on the left of this page.

We also have detailed information about different animals to help you find out what pet is right for you.
